Staples is an American, multinational office supply retail chain headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1985 by rivals in the supermarket industry, Thomas G. Stemberg and Leo Kahn as Staples, Inc. Being a superstore, they planned to buy direct from manufacturers, keeping prices low for consumers.

The idea of Staples came to Stemberg, a former supermarket chain executive turned entrepreneur while he was working on a business proposal over the Fourth of July weekend in 1985, and his typewriter ribbon broke. After driving from store to store, trying to find a stationery store or local business supplier that carried the correct ribbon, which was futile, he came to the realization that what was needed in today’s world was a supermarket for office products. His idea was to cut the middleman out of the office supply industry and provide supplies directly to the business and individual consumers who were in need.

Ten months later, Staples was born, as the first office superstore. Office supplies would now be more accessible and more affordable, to anyone that had the need. This first store was opened in a Brighton neighborhood in Boston in 1986. It was backed financially by Bain Capital, whose co-founder was Mitt Romney. Romney served on Staples board of directors for the first 15 years and helped shape their business model.

This new store was 14,000 square feet, and had a typical warehouse décor with concrete floors and an unfinished ceiling. The store had a huge selection of various office goods, stacked high on metal shelves and shopping carts to assist with the large purchases he anticipated. It was set up with a one-stop shopping theory in mind and had everything you could want for an office from paper and pens, to office furniture, to microwave ovens. And the prices were of great savings as most products were priced at half the price Staples’ competitors offered them at.

In the late 1980’s Staples expanded further and opened stores in the New York market. By the end of 1987 they had a total of nine stores. They also stepped up its marketing efforts by sending possible potential customers a special catalogue promising a free gift with purchase. By 1988 they had expanded to 16 stores and revenues had risen to $40 million.

In 1989 Staples introduced its Private Label or generic office supplies at extremely low prices. Due to their vast expansion, Staples had reached $120 million in sales but had still yet to show any positive earnings, however they did turn its first profitable quarter at the end of January 1989.

They expanded to western United States, Canada and eventually Europe and the United Kingdom. In 1996 they became a member of the Fortune 500 companies as sales surpassed the $3 billion mark.

Today, there are over 1,500 stores across North America. They sell supplies which include office staples from pens to paper to file cabinets, office machines, promotional products, technology, and business services both in traditional stores and from their online store. They cater to the small business owner with great prices and everything you would need for an office. Even though their prices are already low, you can find sales and specials in stores and on their website and they do accept Staples coupon codes online.
