Expedia, Inc. is the world’s leading online travel service, based out of America and owns and operates several international online travel brands including Expedia.com, Hotels.com, Hotwire.com, trivago, , Travelocity, Orbitz, and HomeAway. It was founded as a division of Microsoft in October 1996.
When Microsoft Corporation launched Expedia on its network in 1996, it was the first online travel service offered by a major technology company. The website had a library of multimedia travel guides for consumers to browse through and they could make air, car rental and hotel reservations online. This was a new concept as the internet was more of a browsing tool not a purchase tool at the time and a lot people were skeptical if the website would last.
The idea came from an employee of the CD-ROM division at Microsoft who created CD-ROM travel guides, Richard Barton. The CD-ROM market was collapsing and Barton transferred to the multimedia group and developed the concept of marketing travel online. He presented his idea to CEO Bill Gates at the company’s annual product review, and Gates immediately approved the idea.
Microsoft ran a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal which presented the idea for consumers to access the same reservation system that travel agents used. The ad ran in November 1996 and by March 1997 Expedia reported $1 million worth of travel reservations in a seven day period, with approximately 80 percent was airline bookings.
In 1999, Expedia spun off from Microsoft and went public with Microsoft retaining a majority interest. In the year 2000, Expedia and Travelocity were battling for the number one ranked spot in online travel services. In November of 2002, Expedia launched its arm of Expedia Corporate Travel.
In 2003 InterActiveCorp/IAC purchased Expedia. They continued their growth under IAC’s leadership and acquired many companies in the 2000’s including hotels.com, Hotwire, Egencia, TripAdvisor, and a controlling interest in eLong.
Expedia made some significant changes to their fee policies in 2009, to further appeal to the consumers. They eliminated change and cancel fees on all hotel, car rental and cruise reservations and on nearly all air flight reservations. This allowed travelers a greater flexibility and an edge over Expedia competition. In 2010 Expedia, Inc was named the largest travel agency in the world.
